Virtual work teams present different challenges from traditional work teams, where their members have the possibility of seeing each other face to face; undoubtedly, the exponential growth and the challenges inherent to the educational system derived from the pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 highlight the need to generate research associated with the new teamwork dynamics in order to recognize their structure, functionality, and management in a virtual modality. The objective of this study was to identify the functions and difficulties of virtual work teams of high school students in the state of Durango, Mexico. The methodological approach was based on the quantitative paradigm; the results show that the most valued functions are the fulfillment of tasks, whereas leadership functions are not; the most representative difficulty is the incompatibility among the members of the work team, which generated anger, tension and misunderstandings.
